Poulnabrone car park, County Clare

Nine hand-dug trial trenches were excavated in a field that Clare County Council wished to develop as a car parking site for visitors to the nearby Poulnabrone portal tomb. The trenches were targeted on anomalies identified by an earlier programme of geophysical prospection. No archaeological features or deposits were found in the testing and it is certain that the geophysical anomalies are natural in origin. A small number of low quality lithics were recovered from the topsoil.
